Message from the Dean

Dean Shigenobu Takeda

Welcome to the Graduate School of Fisheries and Environmental Sciences, Nagasaki University

The Age of Food and Environment

The 21st century is an era of food and environment. Many problems of food and environment are piling up in the world and in the region.

It is our responsibility to work toward solving these problems and to develop the human resources to do so.
At the Graduate School of Fisheries and Environmental Sciences, we promote the integration of fisheries science and environmental science to foster highly skilled professionals and internationally-minded researchers who can contribute to solving these problems.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which the United Nations has set for the world to achieve by 2030, include 17 major goals, among which " Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources " and " Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss " are the content of education and research directly addressed by the Graduate School

Diverse Fields of Education and Research

The subjects of fisheries science and environmental science are nature and human society. The subjects of research also vary from the microscopic world of molecules to global-scale problems.
Specific research fields include environmental science, which aims to harmonize the global environment and human society, such as research on climate change, biodiversity, environmental pollution and radioactivity, and natural energy, as well as fisheries science, which conducts basic research on a wide variety of marine organisms and their applications to industry. These fields cover a wide range of topics.
Cutting-edge research activities can be glimpsed from the fact that research projects such as "Understanding and utilizing marine ecosystem functions using tiger pufferfish in response to near-future changes in the marine environment" and "Humanities-science fusion research aimed at creating a regional water circulation society". These projects are among the seven priority research projects of Nagasaki University.
In the Graduate School, about 90 faculty members, together with more than 180 graduate students and young researchers, are engaged in a wide variety of research activities. If you are interested in studying at our graduate school or participating in our research activities, please visit our website. We are sure that you will find a research field that interests you.

Fisheries and Environmental Science in Regional and Global Society.

In the academic fields of fisheries science and environmental science, the results of research conducted in a region can be directly applied to research at the forefront of the world.
Nagasaki, with its varied topography surrounded by sea, land, and air, and its many islands, has the best conditions for education and research in this field. To help with this, we have established the Asia Environmental Resilience Research Center within the Graduate School.
Nagasaki Prefecture is also one of the leading fisheries prefectures in Japan. We can say that our graduate school is exactly the right graduate school for a regional university in the future.
As part of our over-sea activities, our Graduate School, in cooperation with the Organization of Marine Science and Technology has established overseas bases and exchange promotion offices at universities in China, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Kenya, and has conducted student exchanges and joint research. A double degree system has been established with two universities in Taiwan.
Other universities with which the Graduate School has made special efforts in exchange include the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, and Scotland.
Recently, a short-term exchange of graduate students with a university in the United Kingdom is getting underway.
In addition to promoting education and research using these resources, we are working to develop human resources in cooperation with local industries and local governments, and to conduct research activities that will bring innovation to the region, by utilizing comprehensive cooperation agreements with local governments.
We are a graduate school that is pioneering in society. Together, we will work hard to build a safe and prosperous society and give the people of the future a richer life.
