Department of Fisheries Science

Admission Policy

The twenty-first century is considered the era of food and the environment. The most important task of this century is to conserve the global environment and to secure a sustainable food supply. The Graduate School of Fisheries Science and Environmental Studies was established in April 2011 through a reorganization of the Graduate School of Science and Technology, based on the Faculty of Fisheries and the Faculty of Environmental Studies. The fundamental principle of the new Graduate School is: "To cultivate both advanced specialists with practical leadership skills and internationally competent researchers, who can address and provide solutions to environmental and food-security issues, by promoting education and research in interdisciplinary and comprehensive academic fields of fisheries science and environmental studies".

The Department of Fisheries Science in the Master's Program aims to develop human resources who have advanced and specialized knowledge in the fields related to conservation of the marine environment and ecosystem, exploration of diverse phenomena of marine organisms, sustainable production of marine organisms, and effective use of marine biological resources, and have a fundamental understanding of related fields and social skills.

Thus, we seek students from overseas and Japan who have gained the basic academic achievements to study the marine environment and marine biological resources and are motivated to study and conduct research. The Department accepts students through three types of admission examinations: open admission; admission based on recommendation, and special admission for international students. Each of these admission processes seeks students with the above abilities and the following skills and talents.

  1. Open admission: This admission process selects students who have basic academic capability in natural science, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as English and fundamental academic knowledge at the bachelor's level in subjects that students want to study. Prospective students must also be highly motivated to learn.
  2. Admission based on recommendation: This admission process selects students with outstanding academic records who have clear goals in research and demonstrated ability to accomplish their goals.
  3. Special admission for international students: This admission process selects international students who have sufficient Japanese or English language skills to complete research and have strong motivation to make use of the knowledge and skills they learned in the Graduate School in the future.
