 To gain knowledge and experience with the field sciences that target the annually and seasonally varying oceans, it is essential that we undergo well-planned and sustained education. From this perspective, a 5-year doctoral program is underway that provides curricula in the following two courses.

In the Ecosystem Sciences Course, students will acquire fundamental training regarding the interactions among the oceanic, atmospheric, and terrestrial spheres, the oceanic biogeochemical cycles, and processes that influence the bioproductivity of the oceans. Furthermore, students will conduct interdisciplinary research within the fields of the marine environment and the restoration and preservation of the ecosystem to become outstanding field scientists.

In the Bioresources Restoration Sciences Course, students will acquire fundamental training regarding how to analyze and link environmental change to bioproductivity , which forms an important base for our marine food resources. Furthermore, students will conduct interdisciplinary research regarding the sustainable use of bioresources to become outstanding field scientists.

Education for the two courses are focused on the following

  • To conduct interdisciplinary research focused on the restoration and preservation of the marine environment and ecosystem and the sustainable use of resources by using the East China Sea as a model region.
  • To acquire English language skills through taking courses conducted by visiting lecturers, working with students from overseas universities on student-run seminars, and providing talks at international conferences and symposia.
  • Gain at least 6 months of experience studying and conducting research at overseas institutes and in cooperation with co-investigators. (A modest stipend is provided by the university).
  • Acquire broad knowledge and conceptual flexibility regarding the natural sciences through coursework on the social aspects of the oceans and environment.

 This department will be proactively incorporate the most state-of-the-art knowledge in marine field research, related to the conservation and restoration of marine environments and ecosystems, and the sustainable yield of resources, and aspire to bring together enthusiastic people who can contribute to society as scientists and researchers.


Doctoral thesis standard

 The thesis will be prepared in a logical, scientifically acceptable format, and should have characteristics, such as innovation and originality, as well as be the highest in quality. Furthermore the thesis must address fields in the fisheries sciences, environmental sciences, or both and be written in clear and concise English. Specific details are provided in the rules and regulations of the program.
